The J.Crew barn jacket guide: every version worth hunting (1986 to now)
J.Crew introduced the barn jacket in 1986 and has sold it every year since, so thrift racks and eBay are full of them. This guide covers the six runs worth picking up, how to date one from the neck tag in about five seconds, and what each is selling for pre-owned right now.

The six runs
1. The unlined original (late 1980s to mid 1990s)
Plain washed cotton canvas, no lining, horn or horn-look buttons, two big patch pockets at the hip and a flap chest pocket. Corduroy collar. Green neck label with the red crew logo. This is the jacket J.Crew designer Sid Marshburn put in the 1986 catalog, and it is the one collectors want. Navy and faded olive are the common colors; tan is scarcer. eBay, October 14 2026: from $80.
2. Plaid flannel lined (1990s)
Tan or brown canvas with a corduroy collar and a tartan flannel body lining. Flap chest pocket, usually a throat latch under the collar. This is the version in most 1990s catalog photos and the one most people picture when they say "barn jacket." eBay: from $85.
3. Houndstooth lined (1990s)
Dark canvas, contrast corduroy collar, black-and-white houndstooth cotton lining. Often the cheapest run to buy because the canvas fades unevenly and sellers list it as worn when the fade is really the point. eBay: from $55.
4. Leather collar, zip-out wool liner (late 1990s to 2000s)
Olive or brown canvas with a leather collar in place of corduroy and a zip-out wool plaid liner. Royal blue neck label. The heaviest of the vintage runs and the best cold-weather pick. Check that the liner is still present; many were separated. eBay: from $77.
5. The field cut (2000s)
Shorter, boxier, and lighter canvas, with a bright plaid cotton lining. Reads closer to a chore coat than a hunting jacket. Cream label with the serif wordmark. eBay: from $98.
6. Waxed cotton (2010s to now)
Olive waxed twill, snap front, raglan sleeves, bellows pockets in the style of a Barbour. These need rewaxing every few seasons, which is why they go cheap secondhand; a tin of wax and an afternoon brings one back. eBay: from $75.
Read the label: dating a J.Crew barn jacket by its neck tag
| Label | Era | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Green with red crew logo | Late 1980s to early 1990s | Dark green woven label, "J.CREW" in white, small red rowing-crew mark. The tag collectors want. |
| Royal blue | Mid 1990s through 2000s | Bright blue woven label with white "J.CREW". The most common tag on barn jackets. |
| Cream with serif wordmark | 2000s onward | Off-white label, serif "J.Crew" wordmark, often a separate size and fabric tag below. Usually on lined and field cuts. |
Two more checks: the care label. Pre-mid-1990s jackets usually say Made in USA or Hong Kong; later ones say China, Vietnam, or Indonesia. And the buttons: real horn or heavy horn-look resin on the early runs, lighter plastic on 2000s jackets.

Frequently asked
- When did J.Crew start making the barn jacket?
- 1986. It has been in the catalog continuously since, and J.Crew ran a 40th anniversary campaign for it in fall 2026.
- How do I date a J.Crew barn jacket?
- Neck tag first (green, blue, cream, in that order), then lining (none, plaid or houndstooth, zip-out wool, waxed), then the care label's country of origin.
- Which one is most collectible?
- Green-tag unlined originals from the late 1980s and early 1990s, especially navy or faded olive with horn buttons.
- Is the waxed version worth it?
- Yes if the price is under $80 and you are willing to rewax. Check the inside of the cuffs and pocket edges for dry, cracked wax, which means it has gone unwaxed for years.
